There are few better feelings in the winter than sitting in front of a real fire , whether that is an open grate, a wodburning stove or a multi fuel burner. Getting the right fuel , however, is some times something which is left to chance. It can be tempting to pick up odd branches and fallen wood on your walks, or possibly use fallen wood from your own garden if you are lucky enough to have a large enough one. For most people however, it is necessary to locate a source of timber which can be delivered cut and ready for use , in sufficient quantities.
Again , it may be tempting to go just for the cheapest you can find, but the cheapest timber to buy may not be the most economical to use. All fire wood needs to be properly seasoned before it will burn properly. Wood which isn“t will not burn cleanly and will spit dangerously and produce too much smoke and / or tar. Even here however there are superior products.
The very best wood fuel you can buy is kiln dried timber which will have been air dried , then kiln dried and then air dried again. Usually Ash ,Beech or Oak or a mixture of the three, kiln dried logs have all the advantages of seasoned wood and more. They burn hotter and last longer than other firewood and so are more economical in the long run. When sourced locally they are also ecologically very sound, so well worth looking for.
